Eating on a strict budget requires creativity, especially when prices rise and sales disappear. Inspired by extreme budget challenges, I attempted to cook and eat for less than $5 a day. Despite high city prices, I managed to purchase nineteen ingredients for a total of $34.94.
My haul included “luxury” eggs at $4.39 and essential peanut butter, but I found bargains on instant oatmeal and chickpeas. To make this work, I established one rule: pantry staples like oil, spices, and condiments did not count toward the budget, provided I used them sparingly (two tablespoons max).

Thirdly, Food often tastes better the second time around. Cook grains in large batches, then change their flavor profile daily. You can slow roast, stew, or sauté leftovers to create different textures and keep meals exciting.
4. Use Ingredients Creatively
When standard ingredients are unavailable, improvise. If you cannot find wheat flour, grind oats to make oat flour. You can also transform potatoes into gnocchi or rice into crackers to stretch your supply.
5. Master Your Spices
Spices are the heroes of budget cooking. If buying single jars is too expensive, choose spice blends to add balanced flavor to soups and stews. Experimenting with seasonings ensures your low-cost meals remain satisfying.
